Building Aux Tank Stand

This project involved creating a stand that would hold 3 10-gallon aquariums, maybe four. I just wanted some sort of modest setup that would look decent. So I picked up some 2x4s at the local Home Depot and some paint to match the original tank and build this stand.

The horizontal cross braces (with the exception of the top one) are dado cut into the vertical 2x4s for strength. This time around, I learned and painted the stand flat black with some cheap paint before I applied the cool-looking speckled stone-looking finish. It dramatically reduced the amount of paint I needed and since that fancy paint is about five times more expensive than regular paint, it was a good deal.

Around the same time, I took my old 10g eclipse setup and filled it with water, dumped some aragonite and sand in it, trashed the hood, put in a Millennium 2000 and a Skilter and moved my damsels into this tank. This is the lower tank on the new stand. The upper tank is a 10g undergravel setup which is housing my Mandarin Goby at present.

So this is my tank room at present (above). I have a 32g trash can that holds aged seawater, along with a few 5g for freshwater top-off. I'm probably going to get a larger fw containter soon. Everything seems to be doing well.

Below are two corals I now have in the tank. The one of the left I believe is some sort of Licknia coral that I was told by the LFS was hardy and liked a lot of light - since I have a nice light setup I wanted something that would take full advantage of it.

On the right is my pink and purple Fungia plate coral. This coral is really neat but I'm not sure how well he's doing right now. The picture below was taken at night when he was opened up.

This next picture was taken after I put a few mysis shrimp next to the coral. He secrets some sort of mucous membrane which is either a defense mechanism or a means to trap food.
